POSCO, the only national furnace enterprise in Korea , was established in 1968. It has two steel mills, Pohang and Gwangyang. The main product is hot rolling, cold strip, steel plate, wire rod and blooms. From 1970 to 1973, POSCO has built Pohang Steel Mill with the size of 1.03 million ton which has 4 furnaces. Gwangyang Steel Mill was established in 1987 and currently has 5 furnaces. The yearly production of steel is 28 million ton.

In 1994 POSCO was listed in NYSE and in the following year it was listed in LSE. By 1997 it introduced outside board of directors system. In 2000, after Development Bank sold its entire shares of POSCO, the company was privatized. In 2001 it started regional heating business, and in 2002 it included conveying, processing and selling minerals in both domestic and overseas market as a new business objective.
